The Grand Hotel President, in celebration of the Holy Week in Sorrento, which is famous all over the world for its moving Easter rites and rituals in the form of two historical processions, would like to propose an inspired programme from the traditions of the area and the Sorrentine culture, an unforgettable experience of total relaxation at their Spa.
The ‘Processions’ of Good Friday in Sorrento, in memory of the Passion of Christ.
The White Procession – Our Lady Suffering
During the early hours of Good Friday, the procession walks through the streets of the historical centre of Sorrento, and then returns to Cathedral at the light of dawn. The members of the congregation wear a hooded white robe with a black belt.
The procession is led by a band who play well-known funeral marches and is accompanied by around 200 men chanting Latin verses of the 50th psalm. Altogether, there are almost 500 participants enlightened by torches that accompany the statue of Our Lady through the steps of Christ’s Passion.
The Black Procession – Christ’s Death
The procession, which starts at 21:00 hrs, is led by a musical band that plays Chopin’s funeral march. This time members of the Congregation follow the band entirely dressed in black hooded robes; some holding whips, others carrying ropes, lanterns and a banner displaying their emblem. Again, the moving choir will be reciting the 50th psalm of David begging for forgiveness for their sins.
